While the American social class system is a vaguely defined concept with many contradicting theories, [26] [27] educational attainment emerges as one of the top assessments of social class. Not only is a high educational attainment a status symbol by itself, but it is also very closely related to the other two main indicators of social class: occupation and income.   “Home library size has a very substantial effect on educational attainment, even adjusting for parents’ education, father’s occupational status and other family background characteristics,” reports the study, recently published in the journal Research in Social Stratification and Mobility.

Its strength and effect relative to other variables, like intelligence and social class, are demonstrated via path analysis. It has a greater influence on the educational attainment of girls than of boys. Possible processes leading to both the differential and the general effect are discussed. Individuals with parents who have lower levels of educational attainment tend to have fewer socioeconomic advantages, and those whose parents have higher levels of educational attainment often have greater socioeconomic advantages.

This paper examines the effects of family structure on educational attainment after controlling for common family influences, observed and unobserved, using data from siblings. The use of sibling data permits us to examine whether the apparent effects of family structure are due to unmeasured characteristics of families that are common to siblings.   Determined to Succeed?: Performance versus Choice in Educational Attainment (Studies in Social Inequality) [Jackson, Michelle] on *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.
